TELECOM ITALIA CONFIRMS FIXED-LINE NETWORK SEPARATION
^c.2006 Bloomberg News<   By Chiara Remondini
Oct. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Telecom Italia SpA, Italy's biggest phone company,
confirmed it will shift the fixed-line access network into a separate unit. A
plan to split off the domestic wireless business may have been shelved,
analysts said.
Milan-based Telecom Italia didn't mention the separation of Telecom Italia
Mobile SpA, which was part of the reorganization plan announced on Sept. 11,
in its stock-exchange release today.
``I don't think it's happening,'' said Raj Sinha, an analyst with JPMorgan
Chase & Co. in London, referring to the separation of the mobile unit.
Salvatore Provinzano, an analyst with Il Nuovo Mercato in Rome, said ``it
looks like splitting off the mobile phone business is no longer on the
agenda.''
Telecom Italia announced last month a plan to split its mobile and
fixed-line telephone businesses, as well as an increased focus on Internet and
media content. The plan marked a shift in strategy after Telecom Italia spent
$26 billion to buy back its wireless unit last year.
``Telecom Italia confirms that convergence between fixed telephony, mobile
telephony, broadband Internet and media content remains its strategic goal,''
it said in today's release.
The company will invest to upgrade its access grid and transform it into a
``new generation'' network able to transmit television shows and other content
before separating the unit, Telecom Italia said.
