ROME - We are still waiting in Italy for the promised change to the new law against music and content piracy. The government has passed a law that sentences jail for those that just download music for their personal use. Jail? Yes, jail. (At the same time, the government has passed a law stating that cheating the public with false corporate annual reports is not a penal issue anymore)!

RIAA files 750 new file-trading lawsuits. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on Thursday announced it has filed 750 new lawsuits against alleged file-traders using peer-to-peer (P-to-P) software.

ROME - Today, Europe has a Constitution. It is a Constitution with many problems and one big strong, innovative aspect: it is made for working at a new institutional level, above the religious, cultural, national traditions that have created the history of Europe. A history that has always been one of division and war, and that now has a way out of all that.

This is the meaning of what Europe says it is its identity: a Union of minorities.

Italy has arrived to this day with some weird experiences. The Vatican has looked for a way to stop the process asking for a Constitution that stated the fact that the new Europe is born from its Christian roots. And just before the Constitution day, Rocco Buttiglione, catholic minister of the government, wanted to create a way in for Vatican's opinions in the new European institutional system. By talking about gays as sinners and women as people that should stay home, Buttiglione has been rejected and has lost the possibility for a catholic to enter the new system and make it work in a way that was compatible with catholic values: instead, he choose to go to war against the new institutional culture, which is the very meaning of the new Europe.

But Europe has shown that it counts. And that it counts more and more.

By defeating Buttiglione in the European Parliament, the new European institutional culture has also created a problem for Buttiglione as he will re-enter Italy. Because he will not even be able to regain easily his previous function, as he was minister for European affairs. Europe counts even at the national policy level.

A new era has started. Very slow developments are going on. We will have to be very patient. But it will be very difficult to go back from where we were. Which is a very positive improvement. And will be an example for the rest of the world, too.

Italy will change accordingly. It will become a better place to live in.
